On The Record

The Research Foundation plans to distribute scholarship funds to recruit master’s prepared nurse educators in the Kansas City area.

The foundation will provide scholarships for graduate study. The funds are designated to address the faculty shortage in nursing education. Nationally, nursing schools turned away more than 41,000 qualified applicants in 2005. Nursing schools listed the faculty shortage as the main reason they could not accept more applicants.

The number of faculty members who retire is expected to increase in upcoming years.

To address this issue, the Adrian and Margaret Harmon Scholarship for Master of Science in Nursing in nursing education will provide up to one $20,000 scholarship. A total of 10, $5,000 scholarships will also be available for nurses who plan to pursue a master’s of science in nursing.

Upon completion of their master’s degrees, scholarship recipients must commit to serve two years as a faculty member in one of the 17 member schools of the Greater Kansas City Collegiate Nurse Educators.
