On The Record

The Providence Diabetes Center, Kansas City, Kan., and Roche Diagnostics will offer two free educational programs about diabetes in April.

These programs will teach people how to manage diabetes. Participants will receive a free glucose monitor, a packet of educational information and will be able to speak with a Roche representative.

The first program, “What Can I Eat?” will be offered from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 at Providence’s Keenan Education Center, 8929 Parallel Parkway, by Providence dietitian Anne Hytrek, MSEd, RD, LD, CDE.

Diabetes Center’s Outpatient Education Program Coordinator Ruth Noel, BSN, RN, CDE, will present the second class, “What Are These Blood Sugar Numbers Telling Me and How Do I Use Them?” from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 28.

“Our goal is to teach people how to better manage their diabetes,” Noel said. “Wyandotte County has the highest incidence of diabetes in the metropolitan area, and many individuals in the community have no insurance coverage, or their insurance doesn’t cover education. This is a great opportunity for everyone to receive the educational support they need from our diabetes professionals at no charge.”

Providence Diabetes Center recently received the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for its diabetes self-management education program. The certificate shows that Providence’s education programs meet national standards.

In 2008, the Providence Diabetes Center served 580 clients. These patients were referred from 116 physicians from throughout the Kansas City area.
