U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one out of five people who have HIV are unaware they are infected.

National HIV Testing Day on June 27 provides an opportunity for people to learn their HIV status and gain knowledge to take control of their health and their lives.

“HIV remains a devastating disease, but it is preventable and in most cases treatable,” said Jason Eberhart-Phillips, state health officer and director of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment health division.

About 56,300 new HIV infections occur in the U.S. each year, according to the CDC.

Communities and organizations across the country sponsor programs on or near June 27 to raise awareness about HIV. For a list of testing sites and other information about HIV, visit www.kdheks.gov/hiv/.
