The Society of Chest Pain Centers has awarded Olathe Medical Center a three-year renewal of its Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention. To receive accreditation, OMC demonstrated its commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding specific criteria. On-site evaluations were performed by a review team from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 deaths per year attributed to heart disease. The Society of Chest Pain Centers aims to decrease this number by teaching the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack. These symptoms include heavy chest pain, shortness of breath, and pain in the left shoulder, arm or jaw. The society also aims to reduce the time it takes for heart disease patients to receive treatment and to increase the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment. OMC has interventional cardiologists and cardiology and emergency personnel trained in rapid response and treatment of heart attacks. “People tend to wait when they think are having chest pain, and that’s a mistake,” said Brian Friedman, MD, cardiologist and medical director of the OMC Chest Pain Center. “The sooner a patient arrives in our emergency department, the sooner we can begin treatment – which can mean less damage to the heart and better outcomes. Our accreditation recognizes our continued commitment to implementing these cardiac care best practices to all patients who come to us with signs and symptoms of cardiac disease.”
