On The Record

Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care received accreditation from The National Institute for Jewish Hospice, commonly referred to as NIJH, at the Annual Accreditation and Training Conference on Nov. 19 in New York City.

This distinction, awarded annually, provides a link with NIJH, which provides updates on new Jewish insights in treating the Jewish terminally ill, and in answering all questions on Jewish law that might arise during the course of the year.

“As the only area hospice certified by NIJH, Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care considers it a privilege to train our staff to be knowledgeable about Jewish customs and holidays and sensitive to the observance of Jewish law and rituals at the end of life,” said Stevie Shuchart, clinical social worker for Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care. “It is our commitment to share this information with staff and interested community professionals to increase their ability to provide sensitive and appropriate care to Jewish hospice and palliative care patients.”

Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care is a nonprofit organization founded in 1980 that annually serves about 2,700 seriously ill adults and children and their families. A wide spectrum of programs are available for utilization across the continuum of life-threatening illness including hospice home and nursing home care, a 32-bed free-standing inpatient facility, palliative home care, a pediatric and perinatal program, a counseling program, and public and professional education programs. For more information about the organization, call (816) 363-2600 or visit www.kansascityhospice.org.
