Kansas infant mortality drops

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment, known as KDHE, recently released data stating that the infant mortality rate in Kansas dropped in 2008.

The infant mortality rate in 2008 was 7.2 deaths per 1,000 live births compared to 1.9 deaths per 1,000 in 2007. The number of infant deaths in Kansas was 303 in 2008, that is 30 fewer than in 2007.

 

Centerpoint Medical Center gets cardiology accreditation

Two of Centerpoint Medical Center’s cardiology services recently received national accreditation or certification.

The hospital’s Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation Department received certification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. The association examined the program’s content, administration and outcome data.

 

Heart Association selects leader

altThe American Heart Association named William Lawrence Jr., MD, FACC, FACP, as president of the association’s Midwest affiliate board of directors.

Lawrence serves as an interventional cardiologist with Kansas City Cardiology Associates and director of congestive heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation for Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.

As president, Lawrence will serve as the affiliate’s lead volunteer scientific and medical officer and will be responsible for medical, scientific and public health matters.

 

 

 

Kansas health department encourages diet, excercise

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment, also known as KDHE, conducted a health survey that indicates obesity in Kansas adults has doubled since 1992.

Jason Eberhart-Phillips, MD, MPH, State Health Officer and Director of the Division of Health at KDHE, suggests that one contributor to obesity is today’s tough economic times.

 

KU eye center opens optical store

The University of Kansas Eye Center added a new optical shop on July 1.

Operated by the department of ophthalmology from the University of Kansas Medical Center, the optical shop will provide patients with the opportunity to browse more than 500 frames. Patients can also fill prescriptions for eyeglasses, frames, sunglasses, readers and contact lenses.
