St. Luke’s Hospital has expanded its public umbilical-cord blood donation program to St. Luke’s East-Lee’s Summit.
This program contributes to the world’s supply of cryopreserved umbilical-cord blood units which are rich in stem cells. These stem cells can be used to treat leukemia, sickle cell anemia, metabolic disorders, immune deficiencies, bone marrow failure, as well as other disorders involving abnormal or therapeutically eradicated cells.

Hospital & Health Networks magazine named the University of Kansas Hospital one of America’s 100 Most Wired hospitals for the third consecutive year.
The list honors health care facilities that do the best job using information technology to help physicians, nurses and others improve patient outcomes. This year, 99 hospitals were named to the list from more than 550 that entered the competition.

St. John Hospital, Leavenworth, Kan., recently announced the promotion of two staff members to clinical supervisor positions. Shannon Mingo, RN, MSN, MBA, has been selected as clinical supervisor of the hospital’s medical/surgical services and Holli Eschbacher, RN, has been named clinical supervisor of surgical services.
In her new position, Mingo is responsible for all aspects of the hospital’s medical/surgical unit, including patient satisfaction and quality.

The Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses had its Annual Celebration of PeriOperative Nurse Excellence at the Buca Di Beppo restaurant on the Plaza. Chapter President Marie Barrentine welcomed members and guests, and served as hostess to the awards presentation.
All Certified Registered Nurses in PeriOperative Nursing and Certified Registered Nurse First Assistants received a rose. Scholarship chairman Melissa Harber presented scholarships to Shelly Bosworth, Erica Irvin and LeaAnn Frost. Julia Jackson received an academic scholarship. The association also awarded a $350 undergraduate nursing student scholarship.

National Weather Service’s statistical data shows that heat causes more fatalities each year than floods, lightning, tornadoes and hurricanes combined.
